Kukaya Festival, Night of Giants to clash in Mzuzu

The inaugural Kukaya Urban Music Festival is set to clash with Mzuzu’s annual music celebration dubbed Night of the Giants as both events will be held at venues separated by a few metres.

The urban event will be held between August 30 and 31 at Mzuzu Stadium, which is a stone’s throw away from Squirrels Park where the country’s music giants will meet on August 31.

The giants include the Black Missionaries, Anthony Makondetsa, Lucius Banda and the Zembani Band, Khozie Masimbe and Yanjani Chumbu, among others.

On the other hand, the urban festival has announced an ambitious line-up of 42 musicians and six DJs, with Patience Namadingo and Gwamba as some of the notable artists.

In an interview, Swagg Entertainment chief executive officer Francis Mkandawire said the event has changed venues from the newly-built Swagg Entertainment Park to Mzuzu Stadium due to the number of artists that have confirmed participation as well as the “huge patronage we are expecting”.

He doubted if the clash would affect patronage for either of the shows.

“Our target market is different, so it works as a good combination for the city of Mzuzu. It will be a day to remember,” he said.

Squirrels Park managing director Keliophas Tobius expressed surprise that the festival was shifted to Mzuzu Stadium when organisers “were aware that there was another event to take place close by”.

“The music industry needs to be approached with one spirit. There is no need for competition because we are all serving the same interest and that is to provide entertainment to Malawians.

“But all in all, music fans will have a choice between an urban music festival and the reggae-kind of show,” he said.

The Night of the Giants will be held for the third time since Squirrels Park opened doors in 2016.

The urban festival promises to be a yearly event to give the youth in Mzuzu a platform to showcase their talents. This year, the festival will be held under the theme Make the Talent, the Business to entrench the spirit of entrepreneurship in the young artists.
